Description

In order to reduce wave motions, we can increase effective mass by entraining seawater.

Details

Entrained seawater is seawater which must move when the platform moves. This increases the effective inertial mass of the platform, and thus its resistance to motion. For example, imagine adding an enormous, thin disc to the bottom of a spar. This disc adds very little mass, but provides enormous resistance against vertical movements (heave), because of how much water it entrains.

This can be implemented by:

  • Fully surrounding the water, like a semisub
  • Using large baffles (heave plates). Hanging ballast can function as heave plates.

This pattern can be used in many different designs, by simply adding underwater baffles or plastic bags/containers, which are filled with seawater and thus neutrally buoyant.
