Grid seasteading employs a modular stategy. The modular strategy is generally implemented in the horizontal plane. The low freeboard in a large rigid structure is a potential problem at sea with high amplitude waves. As such, a flexible structure and/or breakwater of some type are required. The concept is mimics natural examples like a field of kelp or a floating vegetation island, having buoyancy as dominating structural support.
