The oceans are not nearly as researched as soil is. It is a vast but unforgiving environment.

The ocean is the most important thing to understand for seasteaders. Some things to really look at include water cycle, waves and swell, sea level, tides, depth, biology, and climate. Without a very clear understanding of the ocean in the area a seastead is doomed to fail eventually.

An inspiring talk by Robert Ballard (who discovered the Titanic) is here. In it, he speaks about why it's strange that a lot more money goes to space exploration than ocean exploration. He concludes by asking why we aren't going to live at sea.
