The world's first OTEC pilot plant was situated in Nauru. In Part 1 the 1/2 mile OTEC cold water pipe (CWP) was assembled and launched. In Part 2, the CWP is towed across the open ocean to the OTEC platform, moored 12 miles off the Kona Coast. The intake end is slowly lowered down into the abyss by tug-boat control, until it becomes verticle almost 1/2 mile down, and then transferred delicately to the ship (OTEC-1 Platform). The hook up created a successful OTEC demonstration. The technology is there, and the ocean thermal energy conversion system worked as designed.
